Privileged Points

19-01-2019 - 22-09-2019
More information
Following the 2018 acquisition of Privileged Points - a monumental sculpture work by Iranian artist Nairy Baghramian (*1971) - into the Mudam Collection, Mudam Luxembourg - Musee d'Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean is proud to invite Baghramian to present her work for the launch of the Park DrĂ€i Eechelen new sculpture programme. The installation of the artworks will be split between two locations, the collection piece will be displayed in the Grand Hall of the museum while the accompanying two works of the series will occupy the esplanade of Park DrĂ€i Eechelen. In 2018 Nairy Baghramian was the invited artist for the Festival d'Automne in Paris, and her work has recently been presented in museums and art institutions such as the Walker Art Centre in Minneapolis and the Palacio de Cristal - Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, as well as the 54th Venice Biennale (2011) and documenta 14 (2017).

As suggested by the title - Privileged Points - the sites of these bent and lacquered metal forms are the result of a carefully considered selection. According to Baghramian, the sites indicate the so called "ideal" locations for the display of her sculptures, they include museum floors, walls, immediate outdoors and the surrounding areas and the chosen locations offer specific vantage points that convey underlying meaning.

Baghramian's sculptures are made of steel, bronze, silicone, resin or leather and are reminiscent of protuberances, cavities, drips and prostheses which occasionally recall parts of the human body while putting emphasis on relation to architecture, craftsmanship and decoration. Baghramian values the methods with which her pieces are arranged and presented within a site, and by doing so, she questions function and history of the presentation space. Often arranged in a falsely disordered fashion or by incorporating fine and fragile structures that seem on the verge of collapse, her works are characterised by a sense of instability that reflects the artist's relationship with the sculptural domain and art history.
