Der Freischütz

06-10-2019
More information

Der Freischütz occupies a fundamental place in the history of music. It was the first German Romantic opera, a precursor to Wagner's work twenty years later. Even though it was constructed as a singspiel, Weber raises it to the level of a lyrical drama. Der Freischütz depicts a fantastical world inhabited by witches and knights, where souls are sold to the devil, young girls are transformed into doves and bullets turn out to be magical. It is a fantasia that comes straight out of German literature as exemplified by Goethe or Hoffmann, centred on the themes of class struggle and generational conflict as well as the triumph of Good over Evil.

This Freischütz is a spectacular opera in which illusions and distorted reality plunge the audience into a world of poignant beauty. By choosing this particular work, which is staged by the company 14:20, Laurence Equilbey pursues her exploration of the Classical and Pre-Romantic repertory.
